STONEHAM — The following is a statement from Stoneham Town Administrator Dennis Sheehan and Stoneham Police Chief James O’Connor.
“In the spring of 2023, the Town of Stoneham and the Stoneham Police Department initiated an internal investigation in reference to allegations concerning the conduct of Thomas Heller, who was at the time of this inquiry employed as a police sergeant. An investigation was conducted by an independent investigator hired by the Town of Stoneham. Once the initial allegations were credibly corroborated, Heller was immediately placed on administrative leave during the remainder of the investigatory and disciplinary process and the Town notified the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission of the allegations. The investigation determined that Heller violated department policies, rules and regulations regarding his use of vulgar and racially insensitive language on multiple occasions while on duty, he was also found to be untruthful during the investigation.”
“Facing termination by the Town, Heller resigned from the Stoneham Police Department. On advice of counsel, the Town did not contest the resignation, and entered into a separation agreement detailing the terms of his separation. Heller did not receive any additional compensation or wages beyond what was owed to him under his collective bargaining agreement and the law. The POST Commission was notified, and the results of the investigation and outcome were provided to the Commission.”
“The Town’s actions were thorough, and in accordance with POST Commission requirements. As a direct result of his misconduct, Heller is no longer a member of the Stoneham Police Department. There is no place for hateful language among the members of the Stoneham Police Department. We are committed to serving in partnership with our community in an unbiased and impartial manner, while treating all with respect, compassion, and fairness. The Stoneham Police Department is committed to delivering the highest level of police services to our community. When someone fails to meet those standards, they will be held accountable.”
